It’s a pity that electronics are not adaptive: you have to slow down yourself. The function of maintaining a distance will come with restyling.

Are there any builds? And what are the changes?

No paint streaks were found even in potentially ambush places. Bumpers do not differ in color from metal parts. The gaps are even everywhere, the seals do not fall off. Yes, and I, I confess, did not bother myself with a detour of the pits. The only joint is a curved panel above the display in the center. But this is clearly not an assembly flaw, but a defect in the production of the panel itself.

For nearly five years of presence in Russia, Haval H9 has not been marked by any inconsistency with our realities. Therefore, they did not introduce noticeable innovations in cars of Tula origin. Changes – a minimum: improved “response” of the tailgate handle for reliable operation in cold weather and the obligatory ERA-GLONASS system with a block on the ceiling.

Do we need it?

Impressive at first. Then it makes you think – is it too much? The device is still specific, it requires proper handling so as not to break the wheel drives. Yes, and it seems to be necessary only in extreme situations, which do not really fit in with elegant body-color bumpers and pretentious interior trim in leather and wood.

But practice has shown otherwise. On the Haval H9, we traveled around the Elbrus region – approximately in those parts where we recently tested upgraded Hyundai Santa Fe. However, if bumpy and sometimes blurry mountain primers are the limit of reason for a crossover, then driving a serious SUV you want more adventure.

And the updated “nine” is able to provide vivid impressions without much risk to your own and your health. It was personally verified: with all-wheel drive completely blocked (the mode is active up to 40 km / h), Haval H9, even on Cooper Discoverer HTS asphalt tires, climbs loose rocky slopes with ledges without any tension, where tourists are usually taken on lifted UAZs.

And the less nerves and hysterical slipping in the journey, the more intact the car. In addition, it has become much easier to maneuver on the almost five-meter H9 in the tightness of the forest and rocks. In such situations, the front lock is already to the detriment – turn it off. But another fresh system helps out – off-road cruise control with the “tank turn” function (Tank turn).

Similar special electronics for a long time uses Toyota on Kruzaks: The machine automatically maintains a creeping “pedestrian” speed, slowly and carefully passing over obstacles, which allows the driver to fully concentrate on taxiing. Moreover, when cornering, the inner rear wheel is actively slowed down, thereby seriously (by about a meter) reducing the radius of movement of a bulky all-terrain vehicle. On the one hand, it is reasonable, on the other hand, to accurately set 5 or 10 km / h, as it turns out at Toyota, it will come out here if only by accident or after hard training.

Of course, the Haval H9 allows you to perform off-road acrobatics with the support of new features only when you turn on the downshift in the BorgWarner transfer case. The unit increases traction by almost 2.5 times, so you rarely feel sad about the absence of a diesel engine – when your eyes fall on the consumption meter screen with numbers far beyond 20 l / 100 km. But in the upper transmission row, the gasoline engine demonstrates its specific character much more prominently.

Tension instead of pressure

And the updated Haval H9 has been redesigned steering mechanism. The hydraulics were replaced by an electric booster with an assisting motor on the rail, which made it possible to realize previously impossible abilities – including adjusting the degree of intervention of the unit in the driving process (feedback is programmed through the menu or by turning the travel mode washer). Also, the SUV now not only warns about leaving the lane, but also automatically stays in it.

The system works no worse than on European, Korean or Japanese models, trying to push the car into a turn on serpentines. But the problems are also familiar from competitors. In particular, even with the roughest sensitivity settings, for some reason, the electronics try to correct the course on a straight line, when there is absolutely no need for this. This constant nervous background of micro-steering on the rim is tiring and annoying.

And, of course, you should not confuse the assistant with a full-fledged autopilot. For a while, Haval H9 is able to drive on its own, clinging to the markings. However, if the assistant considers that there is no way to stay on course, then the SUV suddenly gives up trying to enter the turn and goes straight straight – into the oncoming lane or into the bump stop. That’s why you shouldn’t ignore the car’s call to put your hands back on the wheel.

But the camera behind the windshield, which allows the car to read the road and the situation around, was also useful for other, more useful functions – traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam control. By the way, still bi-xenon LEDs have not yet been installed on the Russian Haval H9, although in China the LEDs on this model have been in use since 2019.
