Specifications
The 2022 Toyota Highlander in the new body has become more like the RAV4: judging by the photo, both crossovers are equipped with identically designed head optics and a radiator grille. But the 7-seat model offers buyers richer equipment at relatively high prices. Highlander is also similar to RAV4 in its technical characteristics., although it is large.
In Russia, the 7-seater crossover is presented with only one naturally aspirated 3.5-liter engine, which is combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust. The declared net power of this motor is limited to 249 hp. (abroad – 295 hp) with a maximum torque of 356 N * m. Highlander in this version consumes an average of up to 9.5 liters of gasoline. By default, the Japanese model is equipped with all-wheel drive with an intelligent system of active torque redistribution along the axes. In the event of a slip of the front wheels, up to 50% of the traction is automatically transferred to the rear. Highlander also received a proprietary Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system. If necessary, it can redistribute torque between the rear wheels, using special clutches.
In a number of countries, Highlander is also offered with a hybrid installation. It is based on a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine and 2 electric motors at once. The total output of such an installation reaches 240 hp, the average fuel consumption is 6.8 liters. This fuel efficiency is partly due to the fact that this unit comes with a proprietary system that analyzes driving style in order to get the most out of the battery. In the hybrid version of Highlander, a separate electric motor connects the rear wheels.
The basis of the Japanese model is standard. At the front of the crossover there are McPherson shock absorbers, at the rear there is an independent suspension on two wishbones. The length of the Japanese model reaches 4966 mm, width – 1930 mm, height – 1755 mm. The wheelbase is 2890 mm, the ground clearance is 204 mm.

Specifications
The machine has a suspension design, including suspension struts at the front and a pair of wishbones at the rear. Brakes on all wheels are disc. The design is largely reminiscent of the smaller RAV4.
In the engine range there is only one power unit. We are talking about a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated engine that produces 249 horsepower. But it is worth noting that its potential is designed for 295 “horses”. It’s just that Toyota deliberately limited the power so that the car was more profitable in terms of taxes. The engine consumes 9.5 liters of fuel for every hundred kilometers. From standstill to hundreds, the car accelerates in just 8.8 seconds. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic transmission. The crossover has a plug-in all-wheel drive system with electronics that evenly distributes traction to all four wheels. This allows the car to stand on a par with SUVs. In the US, there is a hybrid version based on a 2.5-liter “engine”. In this modification, there is a 48-volt starter-alternator and an electric motor on the rear axle. At the same time, the power is 240 hp, and the fuel consumption is 6.8 liters.
The car is quite large. Body length 4966 mm, width 1930 mm, and height 1755 mm. The weight of the car is 2.1 tons. However, you can get used to such dimensions, which is helped by various electronic systems. After driving for a month, you can adapt to the 2022 Toyota Highlander. And it is easy to perform various maneuvers around the city. The ground clearance of the model is 204 mm. In any configuration there is a seven-seat layout. However, given the large length and wheelbase of 2890 mm, it is not difficult to guess that there will be enough space in the car for both the driver and all passengers. The car can be used for family trips, because the volume of its trunk, despite the presence of the third row of seats, is 454 liters. All the necessary things will fit there.

Handling and off-road ability
The updated Highlander is comparable in ride and handling to some Lexus models. The Japanese crossover, thanks to such characteristics, fully corresponds to the title of a family car. Highlander boasts excellent sound insulation: a running engine is not heard in the cabin, even if the engine spins up to maximum speed. At the same time, this unit provides high traction, and the automatic transmission acts as if trying to please the driver.
However, keep in mind that the Highlander is a large car. That is, the Japanese novelty is not sufficiently maneuverable and dynamic. It picks up speed relatively slowly and does not always accurately enter turns. Although its all-wheel drive and can partially eliminate understeer. On the other hand, the suspension easily levels out the bumps that are typical for Russian roads. The steering wheel, like most Toyota models, is smooth and has good feedback.
In terms of off-road capability, the Highlander outperforms direct competitors such as the Honda Pilot or Hyundai Palisade. A significant role in this is played by proprietary systems that provide automatic redistribution of torque between the axles and rear wheels. Thanks to this feature, the car rarely gets stuck even when moving along a rutted track. But the 204 mm ground clearance prevents the Highlander from being constantly used off-road.
New or used car?
Toyota has completely redesigned the 2022 Highlander, so used models are significantly different from new ones.
The base Highlander now comes with a V6 engine and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that was optional on past years. In addition, support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay services has been added to the standard equipment package. Also, the new Highlander received an expanded list of safety features, which includes traffic sign recognition, pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring and other advanced systems. Considering all the updates, choose the 2022 Toyota Highlander.
How we tested the 2020 Toyota Highlander
Specifications
Toyota Highlander 2022 will fall into the possession of domestic motorists only with a 3.5-liter gasoline engine that produces 249 tax-friendly forces. The gearbox has no alternative: an eight-speed automatic, as well as a drive, is always full. But with a “hybrid” inaccessible to Russians, the return of which reaches 240 “horses”, the transmission will be different. As the test drive showed, this option will be much more economical: 6.8 liters of fuel for each “hundred” versus 9.5 liters for a purely gasoline power unit.
In general, this almost five-meter giant with a solid ground clearance of 20.4 centimeters will be able to solve almost all problems both on the road and beyond.
