History of the brand Chevrolet / Chevrolet

Chevrolet is a famous American car manufacturer. The company was founded in 1911 by American businessman William Durant and French racing driver Louis Joseph Chevrolet. Durant later organized the General Motors car company, but Chevrolet never ran the company. The firm’s cross emblem was taken by Durant from a wallpaper pattern in a Parisian hotel. Currently, this Chevrolet cross has become the most promoted symbol in advertising, and the Chevrolet brand has become a symbol of the US automotive industry. The history of the Chevrolet brand is actually the most important part of the history of automobile production in America. In early October 1911, the company produced its first car, the Chevrolet Classic-Six. It was a typical American four-seat car with a four-cylinder engine developing 30 hp. It was five times more expensive than the Ford T and was therefore not successful in the United States. The year 1953 is marked by the appearance of the legendary Corvette sports car. A lightweight 2-seater has become the dream of many Americans. In 1958, the Impala brand leaves the assembly line of Chevrolet, in which the company’s designers managed to combine the spaciousness of a Cadillac with the price of a Chevrolet. Chevrolet Impala immediately began to be in great demand and to date holds the sales record for full-size cars. In August 1966, the Chevrolet Camaro rolled off the production line. With this car, Chevrolet gave an answer to Ford’s Mustang – the latter was in great demand and there was no worthy alternative to it at that time. A year later, Chevrolet releases a supersport modification of the Camaro SS. In 1962, the name “Malibu” appeared for the first time – it was the “top” equipment of the Chevrolet Chevelle. The attractive design of this model and rich equipment allowed the company to get a high level of sales and consolidate its position in the class of mid-size cars. With the advent of the 70s, Chevrolet modernizes its “muscle cars” making them more powerful and faster. But the impending fuel crisis did not allow further development – with rising gasoline prices, the company seeks to create more economical models. Powerful and voracious “muscle cars” are gradually losing demand. In the 1980s and 90s, Chevrolet cars evolved noticeably. They have become more economical, more compact, many models receive a front-wheel drive chassis layout. The American-Korean company GM DAT, which owns the Chevrolet brand, mainly supplied cars of Korean origin to Russia. At the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, the assembly of Daewoo models produced under the Chevrolet nameplate was organized. These are sedans Lacetti, Epica, Aveo (hatchback and sedan) and Rezzo (compact van). Car kits for them were supplied by the same company GM DAT. SUV Chevrolet Niva and the Chevrolet Viva model, based on the Opel Astra, were assembled mainly from Russian components. The Chevrolet Lanos sedan was supplied by the Ukrainian Zaporozhye Automobile Plant from the components of Ukraine, Poland and Korea. General Motors opened its own car assembly plant near St. Petersburg. The design capacity of the plant is designed to produce about 100,000 vehicles per year. In 2015, Chevrolet stops selling its main lineup of cars in Russia and curtails their assembly at production facilities. American-made cars remain on sale: the Tahoe SUV, Camaro supercars and Corvetteas well as Chevrolet Niva produced by AvtoVAZ.

About Chevrolet

Chevrolet is one of the leading divisions of the General Motors concern. The company’s headquarters is located in the northern suburbs of Detroit, the city of Warren. Chevrolet was created back in 1911 by popular racing driver Louis Chevrolet and William Durant, the founder of GM. After some time, Durant loses control of both the concern and the Chevrolet division. However, a little later, in 1918, at the cost of remarkable efforts, Durant regains GM and Chevrolet. Statistics can tell about the company’s success: every sixteenth car driving around the world today is a Chevrolet. The company offers the Russian car enthusiast both classic “Americans” (Tahoe, TrailBlazer) and a cheaper line of Korean-assembled cars. In addition, the company had a hand in the creation of the Russian SUV, which bears the name Chevrolet Niva.
