Despite the fact that the Kia Sportage 1 2.0 gasoline engine was quite successful and moved the car at a good speed, everything was not as good with the appearance of the company’s engineers as with the technical part. The exterior of the car was not particularly original and sophisticated.
Kia Sportage 1994 stands out among other SUVs with the simplicity of harmonious lines that can create the appearance of a friendly car. And also, these lines definitely inspire confidence for drivers, as they predispose car owners to their goodness and lack of mind-blowing power under the hood.
The overall dimensions of the Kia Sportage of 1998 and the first modifications differ from each other in the form of length, the rest of the parameters are unchanged, with the exception of the mass of the car. Depending on the modification of the car, the length of its body can be from 3760 to 4340 millimeters. In this case, the mass of the car is 1513-1545 kilograms. The width is unchanged for all modifications – 1735 millimeters, with a height of 1650 millimeters.
The size of the disks on the Kia Sportage 1 made it possible to obtain a rather large ground clearance, which was about 20 centimeters. A frame was used as a supporting structure for the body. The body is made of a fairly durable metal, but, nevertheless, over time, it lends itself to corrosion, especially often rust begins to form at the rear arches and at the bottom of the doors. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that rust often forms in places that are covered with a plastic body kit, so it is recommended to carry out additional anti-corrosion treatment.

Getting into the car is quite convenient – the car door opens wide, almost 90 degrees. There is not too much interior space in the car, and if the front passenger or driver pushes the seat all the way back, the adult sitting behind does not feel very comfortable. In total, the cabin is designed for four passengers, including the driver. The three-spoke steering wheel looks rustic, on the dashboard all the instruments are pointer – the tachometer is on the left, and the speedometer is on the right.
The steering column is adjustable only in height, however, the driver is comfortably placed at his workplace. Visibility from the driver’s seat is good, but the body left pillar interferes with visibility somewhat. The interior trim is ordinary, but the plastic is not creaky, the advantage of a cross-country vehicle is very good sound insulation.
The standard Kia Sportage-1 has:
- power steering;
- air conditioner;
- power windows on all doors;
- electrically adjustable mirrors;
- two airbags – driver and passenger;
- ABS.

The level of comfort of Kia Sportage I is visible in the design of the interior space. The instrument panel is made without frills, well organized. The decoration used soft, pleasant-looking materials that are resistant to wear and pollution. If necessary, they can be easily pulled over with modern upholstery.
The interior lines are smooth, the plastic is harsh and creaks. The seats are ergonomic, keep their shape well, are adjustable in several ranges with a lever. Interior lighting is sufficient, but not airtight. It is convenient to get into the car, the doors swing open almost 90 degrees.
If the front seats are retracted to the maximum, adults sitting in the rear seats will experience discomfort. The steering wheel with three spokes looks ascetic, the instruments on the panel are pointer (on the right is the speedometer, on the left is the tachometer). Over time, the dashboard begins to tap and creak.
Specifications
The Korean SUV has gained a foothold in the market due to its low cost and reliability. The country’s auto industry has taken the path of low profits, armed with advanced technologies. The 1st generation Kia Sportage car received admirers and fans. It’s all about simplicity and maintainability. For Russian users, it is important to get a frame SUV for little money. Moreover, it has a continuous rear axle and a two-stage transfer case.
Cars before 2001 were not economical. In the city of Kia with a 2-liter engine, it spends 13-15 liters of fuel per 100 km. In versions on the “automatic” consumption is higher – in winter it can be up to 20 liters.
The car accelerates to 100 km in 16 seconds. The maximum speed is 163 km / h.
“Korean” is sensitive to Russian fuel, to which the lambda probe and the fuel pump react with a breakdown. Elements are exchanged for spare parts from the 10th Zhiguli model.
Acceleration of the car is easy: 6,000 rpm is not the limit. The tank holds 60 liters of fuel.
Front brakes – disc, rear – drum. For the technical characteristics of cars before 2002, this is normal.
By the age of ten, brake hoses are changed. They crack, they leak. The tubes remain in excellent condition.
Engine
In the line of power units Kia Sportage-1 there are two diesel and two gasoline engines:
- 2.0 / petrol 95 l. With.;
- 2.0 / petrol 128 l. With.;
- 2.0 / diesel 83 l. With.;
- 2.2 / diesel 63 l. With. (Mazda).
All Kia Sportage engines are four-cylinder, in-line, the most common SUV engine is a two-liter gasoline engine of the FE model (16 valves, 128 hp). The resource of this power unit is 200-250 thousand kilometersbut under normal use.
The weak point of the internal combustion engine is the viscous coupling, it fails quickly enough, and the motor starts to overheat.
