Why Granta and not Kalina?

Before combining two families into one, Togliatti thought about what to call it. After all, both names are already widely known among the people, and, in general, Kalina is even more harmonious than Granta. But, as AvtoVAZ studies showed, customers had a more loyal attitude towards Granta, and sales of the sedan / liftback significantly exceeded those of the soplatform hatchback / station wagon. In general, it was decided to liquidate the Kalina family, which had existed for 14 years.

Now Lada Granta has the widest range among all AvtoVAZ families. Sedan, liftback, hatchback, station wagon, cross-station wagon – a wide choice even by the standards of European models. But the new family is brought to the market in doses. First, the sedan and liftback debuted – it was with such bodies that Granta was successful before restyling. Other models will be released a little later. This smart move will allow AvtoVAZ to draw the attention of the press to the modified Granta several times. Otherwise, it would have turned out to be a birthday for the New Year. So today let’s get acquainted with the sedan and liftback.

Sat down and went or what?

There are things that I recommend doing right away. It is advisable to check the collapse-dismantling without tightening. I had no questions about the pre-styling car – I drove without problems with wheels up to 50,000 km. But the updated liftback and similar grants from friends slightly ate up the outer part of the tread on the front tires. Exactly so much that it can be attributed to the imperfect quality of cheap tires. Indeed, the steering wheel is straight, the car does not pull anywhere on the move, the run-out is good, the fuel consumption is low. But I stopped by to check, so as not to guess on the coffee grounds. Officials announced about five thousand rubles for the operation! Result: caster and camber are normal. Moreover, the parameters for the left and right wheels are very with minimal inconsistency. The problem was with convergence – a slight loss of tolerance. Simply put, the wheels plowed a little. The shoes have been refurbished. I understand that two new 14-inch Artmotion tires from Belarus will cost less than official wheel alignment control. But there is also a winter set.

First – self-adhesive sealant for the gap between the upper edge of the windshield and the roof (pictured above). In this area, the paint is highly susceptible to abrasive wear. The second is penny plastic tubes for retrofitting sliding window seals. Grant has such a drawback – ajar windows rattle disgustingly in the openings. The tubes are pushed into the seal – and the itching disappears. The work of the power window does not interfere with the refinement.

  • wadded brakesWhere is the brake line? In each “Grant” it is individual, but at first it is the same everywhere: air-air-air – bam! — There is a brake! And you pecked your nose.
  • uncomfortable fitGranta is more comfortable than Zhiguli and Samar and is one level higher in terms of ergonomics. However, the main Kalinovsky defect in it has been preserved – there is an acute lack of steering adjustment for reach.
  • unpleasant soundsA nasty signal, crunchy paddle shifters, sounds of locks, howling transmissions and so on cut into memory. What is it like hearing this every day?
  • quality of interior materialsIt is clear that Granta is in the budget class, but plastic cannot be ignored. Hard, easily scratched. Low quality carpet. Thin ceiling.

How is it going and, most importantly, where?

Grant is not a champion on the autodrome track. Exquisite handling on the “parquet” does not shine. Here it is reliable in taxiing, but no more. But in Russia there are few really smooth roads. To understand Granta’s abilities, one must shift the coordinate system. How do you compare a car with a ground clearance of 195 mm in running order and 160 mm with a full load? Yes, with a mono-drive crossover!

Grants have an almost impenetrable suspension, excellent ride on crushed and undulating surfaces, excellent cross-country ability for a mono-drive and very good handling for such a high passenger car, and even with high-profile tires.

There was a “lift” of the driver’s seat

The interior has been completely redesigned, and now there are more similarities with Kalina. The dashboard is minimalistic, and the readings from it are easy to read even out of the corner of your eye. The speedometer is lined up to 200 km / h, but the “working” speed range is located in the first half. The on-board computer display has white indicators that are remarkably readable during the day and do not blind at night. It displays the fuel level indicator, consumption readings and coolant temperature.

The white backlit keys on the center console and the square heating ducts look more modern and tidy compared to the rounded elements of their predecessor. Behind the gearshift lever, as before, there are two cup holders and buttons for heating the front seats (with one mode). There are no soft plastic, steering wheel keys, reach adjustment of the column or comfortable seats with a wide range of settings. In general, even in the top versions of Granta, you will not forget that you bought one of the cheapest models on the market (from 14,120 rubles).

Among the pleasant moments, I would like to note the presence of heating of the entire windshield, the appearance of height adjustment of the driver’s seat, rear parking sensors, powerful air conditioning, a folding sofa in a 40/60 ratio and not the lousiest radio. Considering that the most expensive Granta costs less than $10,000 at the exchange rate, this is a very good list.
