Interior

The interior of the 2021 BMW 4 Series has a cabin quite similar to the 3 Series, which isn’t a surprising factor. This is not bad and quite predictable solution. Manufacturers have made certain touches that allowed the new model to differ from its four-door counterpart. The interior of the door panels has become smoother due to the fact that manufacturers have installed large grilles for the speakers of the speaker system. In addition, on both sides of the center console is an updated trim.

Other than that, the car has remained roughly the same as the third series, as it is based on it. The build quality and materials used should also be identical, making the 4 Series a well built machine. There may not be anything exciting in the car, but the interior looks really attractive.

Controllability

What there are questions about is the handling of the car. True, this only applies to the sports steering rack on rear-wheel drive models. If we are talking about rear-wheel drive and the rail is not “sporty”, then the taxiing is almost perfect. The adjustment between a sharp short and a smooth big turn of the steering wheel is excellently done.

The front axle of a rear-wheel drive car literally screws into the turn, which is good for serpentine driving and relatively quiet city driving.

The sport rake is more linear and pairs nicely with the all-wheel drive, although its harshness will take some getting used to.

If you use a sports rack and rear-wheel drive, the car starts to constantly leave the trajectory, scours and forces, while taxiing, to look for a balance between stalling into a skid and the planned turning trajectory.

Speaking of drifts. An option has appeared in the G20 – a rear differential with an electrically controlled lock, which means that fans of “handing out a corner” will be able to fully realize themselves on paved areas. The handbrake of the car is electromechanical.

Do not try to open the hood. And the door from inside

Probably, it should have been written somewhere in the cabin in capital letters, because the hood in iX … does not open. At least by hand. It can only be unlocked in a car service, for routine maintenance. The owner can only fold back the branded emblem, under which the washer reservoir neck is located. An unusual solution: we are already familiar with cars in which the hood is opened from the glove compartment, with the ignition key, but for service only, this is something new.

Another interesting fact is that there is no VIN plate under the windshield, it is located under the hood. And at this moment you vividly imagine an episode at some Russian traffic police post, where they love to check the body number.

In general, iX has many such moments. For example, unlike many manufacturers, the German company did not equip the electric car with external retractable door handles, for which we are grateful. But at the same time there is no internal handle, instead of it there is a button. Pressed, unlocked the lock and only then open it. For what? A similar story with the “transmission selector”. Everyone seems to have become accustomed to the lever, albeit not fixed, but no, in iX, instead of the lever, for some reason, the modes of movement are controlled by a barely noticeable, but beautiful key on the “cliff” of the center console. By the way, these are Swarovski crystals – they also made the central washer of the iDrive system, start buttons, volume controls and power seat sliders, now located on the door.

Suspension

The suspension scheme is based on an analogue of the X3: in front there are not double wishbones, as in older models, but McPherson struts, in the rear, the “five-link” is almost exactly the same as in the previous model. In total, there will be 3 types of suspension for these cars – basic (springs), M-package (lower springs) and adaptive (electrically controlled).

M suspension – for a sporty driving style on good roads. In this case, the philosophy of using the sports package and the laws of physics of BMW did not change. M suspension – unregulated and in fact stiff, and far from the concept of “comfort”. The adaptive suspension is adjustable in three positions and looks optimal for our roads – elastic, stiff, but at the same time quite comfortable at the same time.

Wheels, tires and brakes

All new 2021 BMW 4 series vehicles come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. As an option, 19″ rims with 225 / 40R19 all-season tires or 19″ alloy wheels with 225 / 40R19 or 19″ alloy wheels with 255 / 35R19 tires can be ordered.

Only the M440i xDrive Coupe option, in addition to all of the above options, is offered to the buyer with 19-inch alloy wheels, which are shod in 225 / 40R19 tires on the front axle, and 255 / 35R19 on the rear, their width is also different, and equal to 8 and 8.5 inches, respectively.

The 430i and 430i xDrive Coupe models come standard with ventilated brake discs fitted with single-piston floating calipers front and rear. The M440i xDrive Coupe features ventilated discs with a blue caliper sports brake system. On the front axle, the caliper is fixed and with 4 pistons, and on the rear axle it is floating on 1 piston.

Red brake calipers are available as an option for the M440i xDrive Coupe. The 430i variant and 430i xDrive Coupe can also be equipped with any brake system at an additional cost. These brakes provide excellent thermal resistance and short pedal travel for better vehicle handling.

Dynamic capabilities and fuel consumption

The dynamics of the Bavarian model is very decent, regardless of the type of power unit installed under the hood of the car. Even in the version with the least powerful engine, the business sedan accelerates to 100 km / h quite quickly – in 7.8 seconds. If we talk about the most productive motor, then for it acceleration is declared at the level of 3.8 seconds. In any case, the German can easily maneuver and overtake any complexity both in urban areas and on the highway.

Despite the presence of high-power engines, the declared level of fuel consumption of a German car is quite moderate. Even in the version with the most powerful power unit, the cost of gasoline per 100 kilometers will not exceed 10.7 liters in mixed mode. If you purchase a model with a diesel engine, then fuel consumption will be generally minimal – 5.2 liters.

One of the most significant advantages of a business sedan over competitors is the ability to choose a power unit installed under the hood of a car. Depending on the equipment purchased, the motorist will receive a model with one of six available engines:

  • a two-liter 190-horsepower turbodiesel engine with a torque of 400 N * m. It is equipped with a start / stop system, and also meets the parameters of the Euro-5 eco-standard. In accordance with official information, acceleration to “hundreds” in this technical design is achieved in 7.6 seconds, and the maximum speed of the car is 232 km / h.   • a 2-liter turbocharged gas engine with a capacity of 184 “horses”. It is capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and also showing a top speed of 235 km/h. For such a model, there is no alternative rear-wheel drive;
  • a 2-liter turbo engine that is capable of delivering an efficiency of 249 horsepower. This unit consumes 7.3 liters of gasoline and accelerates to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds. Its speed limit is 250 km/h. In this variation, the business sedan is equipped with an all-wheel drive system;
  • diesel 3-liter unit with a power output of 249 hp and torque of 650 N*m. Such parameters allow the 2021 BMW 5-Series to accelerate to a hundred in 5.5 seconds and move at a maximum speed of 250 km / h. The average consumption of diesel fuel is 5.9 liters;
  • 3 liter turbo engine with 340 horsepower. Fuel consumption when driving in mixed mode is 7.3 liters, the top speed is 250 km / h, and it is possible to develop 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds;
  • gasoline turbo unit with a volume of 4.4 liters. Its maximum power output is 530 “horses”. In this embodiment, the sedan will accelerate to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds, and the maximum speed is 250 km / h. Gasoline consumption in the average driving mode is 10.7 liters.

Practicality, comfort and boot space

The iX3 family SUV combines good practicality with premium comfort.

BMW has made sure the iX3 is a premium car on the inside, thanks to premium materials and solid build quality. A standard panoramic sunroof provides good interior lighting and a spacious feel, while options such as three-zone climate control, heated front seats and an automatic tailgate enhance comfort and practicality.

Family SUVs need a lot of storage space for a variety of things. The iX3 has large door pockets and a useful center tray that houses a wireless phone charger and two cup holders.

Size
